Vanilla Bean Gift Sets
Vanilla is a good gift for a baker or an extract maker, and it does not have to be a pound. Every bean on this page comes in a 2 oz pack: whole beans from one origin, vacuum sealed, net weight 2 oz (57 g). Pick any three and they ship free to every U.S. address.
Three sets are below, built around what each origin does best. Or build your own from the full list further down.
Three sets, ready to give

The Baker’s Three
Three Grade A origins that taste nothing alike. Madagascar is the classic, cream and caramel and butter. Tahitian, grown and cured in Papua New Guinea, is bright and floral with tropical fruit. Tanzania runs deep, with cocoa, an earthy base and dried fruit. Bake the same custard three times and the difference is plain.

Rare Origins
For the cook who already keeps Madagascar in the cupboard. Comoros beans grow in the volcanic soil of the Karthala Volcano and taste of sweet vanilla, chocolate and marshmallow. Pompona is a different species, under one percent of the world’s vanilla, with dark chocolate, cherry and plum. Indonesian extract-grade beans round it out: the same planifolia as Madagascar, smooth cream and caramel, the bean to start a jar of extract with.

The Extract Maker’s Three
Three origins, three jars. Madagascar Red Splits make the classic extract. Uganda extract beans run high in vanillin and make a bold, dark one. Tahitian extract beans are floral and bright, and a share of them in either of the others makes a blend. At the ratio in our extract guide, 1 oz of beans to 8 oz of vodka, each pack makes a pint. Started now, it is ready in three to six months. If it has to be ready sooner, our guide to speeding up vanilla extract shows how, and the extract calculator sizes the vodka to the beans.

Keeping them
Keep the pack sealed and in the dark until it is time to use it. A vacuum-sealed pack stores for up to six months in a dark pantry. Once it is open, move the beans to an airtight container at room temperature, still out of the light. More in our vanilla bean FAQ.
Where the beans come from
We buy direct from family farms and grower co-ops in Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, Indonesia, the Comoros and Papua New Guinea, and have imported vanilla since 1994. Every step of growing vanilla, from pollination to curing, is done by hand. That is what is in the pack.
